Homeowner’s Insurance Won’t Pay for Bed Bugs

admin

We all know bed bugs are the worst. Not only do they leave small red bites on your body that lead you to throw everything out in fear that they live there during the day, but they also can cause serious damage to your home. The biggest challenge is that your homeowner insurance won’t cover damage done by bed bugs, or any destructive pest for the matter.

Bed bugs infest your mattress, box springs, tables, curtains, wall paper and more, therefore being very hard to find. Once you find one that means there are many more in your home and you should contact a professional bed bug expert right away. Unfortunately the reason your home insurance doesn’t cover bed bugs is because it’s not considered a ‘sudden’ or ‘accidental’ damage to your home. For example, if there was a bad storm and a tree fell on the side of your house your home insurance would cover that because you had now way to prevent that from happening. Bed bugs are technically preventable according to home insurance companies. In reality there is only so much one can do to prevent them, and this is to have regular inspections in your home. The one thing home insurance will cover is if the damage to your home goes straight to the structure. For example, if termites infest a wall and chew through a joist and it breaks causing the wall to crack then your insurance will cover repairs to the wall, however, you will be responsible to replace the joist  damage.
